A GEORGE III MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIR
After a design by Thomas Chippendale
The shaped toprail centred by a pagoda canopy, above a geometrically- pierced back, the shaped arms with pierced scrolling brackets, the seat covered in light-purple damask, on square legs with alternating plain and geometrical panels, with plastic label ' THE DUNCAN COLLECTION', restorations, the front and sides re-railed, the legs previously with brackets, the back-left leg broken and repaired, restorations and minor losses to the pierced laminated splat, later blocks, the arms previously with further fretwork

Lot Essay

The design of this chair follows one for a 'Chinese Chair' (illustrated) that was designed and published by Thomas Chippendale, in The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 3rd ed., 1762, pl. XXVII.
An almost identical chair was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 3 July 1997, lot 126 (£28,000).
