The voluted arms and Grecian scrolled legs relate to the seats provided by Henry Holland for the Royal Pavilion, Brighton and probably made in 1802 by Elward, Marsh and Tatham, Mount Street, London (E. Joy, English Furniture 1800-1851, London, 1977, p. 41).
A related caned chair supplied by William Trotter to Ninian Home, Esq. for the Library at Paxton House, Berwickshire in 1824, is illustrated in R. Bamford, 'A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840', Furniture History, Leeds, 1983, pl. 51.
