A GEORGE III POLYCHROME-DECORATED TULIPWOOD, AMARANTH AND PARQUETRY PEMBROKE TABLE
Inlaid overall with boxwood lines and crossbanded in mahogany, the oval twin-flap top centred by an oval with pearl border enclosing a grapevine and further stylised flowers and leaves, above a mahogany-lined drawer with Sheffield plate handles, on square tapering legs, brass caps and castors, the underside of the drawer stamped 'F.G.R', with Grosvernor House Antiques Fair label for June 1986, the polychrome decoration refreshed, restorations

Lot Essay

Tables of this pattern, with an oval-medallion top, feature in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Book of 1788 (L. Boynton, (ed.) Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 60). They also feature in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, (pl. 86). Its elliptical Sheffield-plate handles also feature on an elliptical pembroke-table, attributed to Seddon, Sons and Shackleton sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 19 November 1993, lot 100.
