Louis Mathieu de Vaucresson de Cormainville (1715-1798) was the son of François Guillaume Martin, sieur de Vaucresson, and Louise de la Porte. He entered the regiment of the Musketeers in 1733, became Maréchal des Logis in the cavalry in 1735 and 1740, Brigadier in 1741 and Maréchal de Camp in 1759. He fought in Germany during the Seven Years War. He must have met Carmontelle through the Regiment of the Orléans Dragoons. He retired from the army at the end of the war. In 1780, M. de Cormainville became a Lieutenant-general, and in this particular drawing, he wears the green coat with gold embroidery of the Orléans household.

M. de Cormainville's desk is a Louis XV bureau plat à cartonnier . The medaillon on the wall shows King Louis XV in profile
