Lot Essay

Such spatulas were used as valuable items of trade rather than functional lime spatulas which would account for the lack of wear on the present spicimen. According to Battaglia (1990, p.128) they were traded throughout the Louisiade Achipelago. Cf. a similar spatula in the Queensland Museum collected before 1900, Beran, 1988, p.43, fig.56.
