These spirit houses are extremely rare and were carved to represent the men's meeting houses or bai of Palau. The gables on the meeting houses were ornamented with figures associated with fertility and reproduction, most notably the female figure, Dilukai, with spread legs and prominent genitals (absent in this example). The male figures on the board often found behind the Dilukai figure might be be those carved on this spirit house. According to Feldman (1986), old sources suggest that the rows of heads carved on the lower edge of the gable (clearly indicated here) are symbols of head-hunting. Feldman also describes the five different types of spirit house, of which the present example is one of the smallest and could be carried in a basket.
