Lot Essay

In her book on Alessandro Algardi (1595?-1654), Jennifer Montagu notes that the Flagellation group from which this figure is taken recurs in a variety of media, and with two different pairs of flagellators. The central figure of Christ, however, never varies. Reversing her earlier attribution of the figure to Duquesnoy, which was based largely on documentary evidence, Montagu now attributes the figure to Algardi, along with one of the pairs of flagellators.
The present bronze version, with its exquisitely detailed features and rich patination, is a particularly fine cast of Algardi's Christ.
