Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Everett Fahy for the attribution to lo Scheggia, the younger brother of Masaccio. The present picture is clearly an early work, datable to the second half of the 1420s, when
the artist was in closer touch with progressive developments in Florentine painting than he was to be in subsequent decades. Indeed
the angel in profile was evidently inspired by that in Masaccio's Madonna and Child in the National Gallery, London, the centre panel of his Pisa Polyptych of 1426; lo Scheggia is documented as having been with his brother in Pisa in that year
