Lot Essay

The present picture and its companion piece A Potter going to Market with a Storm approaching, Morning, were sold at the artist's sale at Christie's in 1795. By the end of 1793 Wheatley had serious debts and agreed to a sale of his effects, including his house and its contents. On 13 January 1795 the diarist Joseph Farington records: 'Wheatley's, drawings and pictures were sold today ... Two of a smaller size sold in frames for £24.3. -' (see The Diary of Joseph Farington, Ed. K. Garlick and A. Macintyre, II, New Haven and London, 1978, p. 291-2).
