Born in Verona, Rotari spent a decade from 1725 visiting Venice, Rome and Naples before returning to his home town in 1734. There he stayed until 1749 when he travelled north of the Alps, never to return. He worked at the courts of Vienna and Dresden until 1756, when he was
invited to St. Petersburg, where he remained until his death. This and the following two lots, like most of Rotari's work in this genre, are datable to his period in Russia.

A variant of the present picture was sold at Sotheby's, 21 March 1973, lot 119. The motif of a girl holding up a muff to her mouth evidently held a particular allure for the artist (see M. Polazzo, Pietro Rotari, Negrar, 1990, figs.116, 128, 156, 195 and 220)
