Lot Essay
Another view of Santa Maria Zobenigo by Canaletto taken from an oblique angle and with the left side of the picture extending to the edge of the Grand Canal was formerly in the collection of Sir Robert Greville Harvey and is now in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, New York (Constable, op. cit., no.313).
When the present lot appeared in the Berlin sale in 1931, it was attributed to Bellotto. However, Constable, in his preparatory notes for the first edition of his catalogue, wrote 'Certainly A.C.', and subsequently this attribution has not been doubted. Kozakiewicz further confirms this when he states, with reference to the Lepke sale catalogue: 'Constable's attribution to Canale himself is fully supported by the reproduction' (loc. cit.)
