We are grateful to Jean-Pierre de Bruyn for confirming the attribution to Quellinus from a transparency. He points out that a version of the present picture datable c.1635 is in an Antwerp private collection (J. P. De Bruyn, Erasmus II Quellinus (1607-1678): addenda en corrigenda II in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen Jaarboek 1991, Antwerp, 1992, p.169, no.IX and fig.14). In his opinion the present painting is 'undoubtedly of a higher quality' and an outstanding example of the artist's work and he states that he plans to publish it. The Child is very similar, in reverse, to that in an engraving by Schelte Adams Bolswert after a lost painting by Quellinus (J. P. De Bruyn, Erasmus II Quellinus, Freren, 1988, p. 214, pl. 156/1)
