Lot Essay

Edmund Garvey was born in Kilkenny and was first a pupil of Robert Carver. He later studied in Rome and then settled in England, practising first in Bath (1768-78), where he was friendly with Gainsborough, and then in London, and exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy. He occasionally returned to Ireland and was again in Rome in 1798. He died in London.
