Lot Essay

The attribution of the present picture to Rembrandt was generally
accepted, Hofstede de Groot and Bauch dating it c.1632, until it was challenged by Gerson in 1969.

In a letter of 19 September 1992, Professor Werner Sumowski confirms the attribution to Flinck (from a transparency) and states that he proposes to illustrate the present picture in colour in the forthcoming sixth volume of his Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schuler
