Lot Essay

A letter from Martin Colnaghi to Stephenson Robert Clarke, dated 24 April 1903, is glued to the reverse of the frame. This states that Captain Har[vey] had paid #367.10 for the present picture at Christie's on 9 August 188[.]. This must be a reference to The Garden of a Château sold by L. Gauchez of Paris to Martin Colnaghi at Christie's on 21 July 1888, lot 53, for 380gns. (recorded by Redford as #367.10). Presumably Colnaghi confused the present picture, which he bought for Captain Harvey in 1883 and sold for Mrs. Harvey to Stephenson Robert Clarke c.1898, with that which he had acquired for a different client in 1888
