Lot Essay

A rare masterpiece by Someya Tomonobu, showing a pavilion beneath a high mountain. The sky is covered by sekiun (cumulus nimbus) and is realistically portrayed with meticulous skill, as if painted.

Tomonobu was born in Ise province (now Mie prefecture) and studied drawing from Tani Buncho. He lived in Edo as did Kazunobu and Masanobu.
