Lot Essay

The present picture is a sketch for 'Le Concert', one of a pair of pictures by Guérin that were in the possession of a Mme de R., and published by C. Stryienski in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1906 (II, pp.70-71). The companion picture 'La Joueuse de Dominos' shows a contrasting rustic subject.
There is related drawing by Guérin with a similar setting, though differences in the background figures and without the children in the foreground, in the Gatteaux collection (C. Lavallée, Dessins Français du XVIII° Siècle à la Bibliothèque Nationale de l'Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, 1928, p. 68, no. 34, plate 34).
The children feature again in an unpublished picture by Guérin in the collection of the Dowager Duchess of Hamilton. The present picture would appear to be midway between the Ecole des Beaux-Arts drawing and the oil discussed by Stryienski.
