Lot Essay

This type of marble-slabbed frame, with plinth-supported end-scrolls, derives from the Roman prototypes such as the 'antique seat of parian marble' illustrated by Charles Heathcote Tatham in his Etchings Representing the Best Examples of Ancient Ornamental Architecture, 1799, pl. 76. A related frame with palmette-tied and flower-enriched scroll brackets and variegated marble mosaic slab was sold in these Rooms, 16th November 1989, lot 118.
