The reeded-rings and klismos-derived elements of this chair reflect the Grecianising of the light-framed Louis XVI 'antique' chair introduced by Thomas Sheraton's Encyclopaedia, 1804. The bacchic lion-headed medallion centreing the fretted Grecian-ribbon crest-rail also feature in the Encyclopaedia. This form of parlour chair would have accompanied French style furniture, such as the 'pouch table' illustrated in Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803, as 'executed by Mr. M.
