Lot Essay

Derived from the mid-18th century hall or garden temple chair with fretted back in the form of Venus' scallop-shell, this chair with its poetic ornament comprising ribbon-tied laurels framing a medallion of a studious cupid writing on a scroll, in the manner of Clio, Muse of History, reflects the 'antique' taste of the 1780s.
