The shibuichi ishime-ji plate decorated in takabori, gold and shakudo zogan, with a monkey sitting in a plum tree contemplating the moon, signed Tokao Hideaki to; and the shibuichi nanako plate depicting an elephant in takabori and gold and iroe zogan, the reverse in plain shakudo migaki-ji, signed Myojuken Kawashima Tomosada and kao; and the shibuichi migaki-ji base metal decorated with a sennin and a crane in takabori and iroe, signed Yoshitsugu zo, all with a wood box (3)

Lot Essay

The artist is Kato Hideaki who was a student of Ishiguro Masaaki II. He was born in Iwashiro province (Aizu) and later moved to Edo. He worked mainly in his own style and did not always follow the Ishiguro family tradition.

Tomosada was a student of Kikuoka Mitsutomo and usually made ita and sukashi tsuba.

Yoshitsugu was born in 1842 and studied with his father and teacher Toshiyoshi. It was only later that he was permitted to use "yoshi" as his name and continued as a student of Tanaka Seiju.
