Imai Nagatake was born in Kyoto, the fourth son of a paper maker. When he was young he was adopted by Imai Kosaburo, a follower of the Ichijo family. When Imai Kosaburo passed away he refused the stipend [horoku] that he was entitled to and completely changed his status by becoming a student of Fujiki Kyubei. For a tsuba by this artist see lot 130.
