A YOROI ODOSHI WITH AIKUCHI LACQUER KOSHIRAE
Mei: Komei Shimada Yoshisuke, 18th Century, the koshirae 19th Century
The blade forged in masame, tempered edge suguba of nioi, tang machi-okuri with two holes, 8¾in. (22.3cm.), in shirasaya; with a lacquered saya imitating cherry bark decorated with cherry blossom in gold hiramakie, the shibuichi aikuchi mounts en suite comprising koiguchi, kashira and kojiri with a design of cherry blossom of Yoshino, the koiguchi signed Kyukosha Kazutoshi, the kojiri signed Kazutoshi with kao, warikogai and kozuka similarly decorated, the kozuka signed Kazutoshi saku, one shibuichi uragawara formed as a flowering cherry branch, signed Dosai Eiju saku, the baleen wrapped tsuka with a pair of menuki formed as peonies with gilt and copper details

Lot Essay

Kazutoshi was a student of Hashimoto Isshi and later Goto Ichijo. After Meiji Restoration he made kanagu for naval uniforms. He is one of the artists whose profession suffered after Haitorei.
