A TANTO IN MOTTLED RED LACQUER KOSHIRAE
Mei: Gassan ..(toshi) mitsu, late 15th/early 16th Century, the koshirae, 19th Century
The blade hirazukuri, muzori, forging pattern ayasugi, tempered edge ko-midare of nioi, boshi obscure, tang machi-okuri, with two holes, 8 5/8in. (22cm.); encased in a red mottled lacquer saya with shibuichi kojiri, fitted with shakudo nanako fuchi-kashira, kurikata and uragawara en suite depicting junishi [zodiac animals] in gilt, copper, silver and shakudo takazogan, the fuchi signed Sano Naoteru and kao, the replaced shakudo nanako kozuka with a silver compass and a shibuichi oval tsuba decorated with rice farmers in iroe hirazogan, with signature Hosono Sozaemon Masamori and kao, the beige wrapped tsuka with silver menuki in the form of chrysanthemums and other flora

Lot Essay

The artist for the fittings, Sano Naoteru is the son of Naoyoshi and worked in Bunka-Bunsei period (1804-1830). It is said that he was given a fuchi [stipend] by the Satake family of Akita.
