A SOSHU BLADE IN A KAWARI NURI TACHI KOSHIRAE
Mei: Soshu ju Hirotsugu, early Edo period (17th Century), the mounts, late Edo period (19th Century)
The blade honzukuri, iorimune, o-gissaki with very slight torii-zori, forging pattern nashiji, tempered edge notare of nie and nioi, maru-boshi, tang o-suriage with two holes, 28 3/8 in. ( 72.1cm.): encased in a dark brown crushed aogai dusted lacquer saya with spiral decoration, a leather bound tsuka over a same, fitted with shakudo migaki-ji tachi kanagu en suite decorated with a dragon among waves in usunikubori, katakiribori and gold iroe, comprising kogane, kojiri, fuchi-kashira, koiguchi, ashi-kanamono with one leather cord, semegane partly formed as an oak leaf, naga [long]-kojiri, kashira and fuchi signed Suifu Tamagawa Yoshikiyo and kao, a silver rounded square tsuba decorated with a dragon and waves in usunikubori and katakiribori, signed Kosuiken Hirano Eizui saku, and a pair of gold menuki of karashishi, slight dents and wear

Lot Essay

The artists of the fittings, Yoshikiyo and Eizui were from Mito. Tamagawa Yoshikiyo was a student of Tamagawa Yoshihisa. It is not certain if he is the same artist as Ishiguro Yoshikiyo.
