A label on the reverse of the miniature identifies the sitter as Mary, wife of Nicholas Loftus Tottenham. This miniature was painted about 1785 and therefore could not depict Mary, eldest daughter and heir of Sir Gustavus Hume, 3rd Bt., of Co. Fermanagh, who married Nicholas, 1st Viscount Loftus in 1736, as she died in 1740. Their son Nicholas, 2nd Earl of Ely died unmarried in 1769 when the Earldom expired.
