Ferdinand VII (1784-1833) succeeded to the throne of Spain and the Indies on his father's abdication 19 March 1818; a few months later he renounced his rights in favour of his father and with him ceded Spain to Napoleon I; lived in exile in Valençay during the reign of Joseph Napoleon; restored as King by the Treaty of Valençay, 11 December 1813; returned to Spain on 24 March 1814 and declared his daughter Isabel, heiress to the throne 29 March 1830, abolishing the law of 1713 which had provided for male succession only. He married four times: firstly Maria Antoineta Teresa, daughter of Ferdinando I, King of the Two Sicilies (died 1806), secondly his niece Maria Isabel Francisca (1797-1818) daughter of Joao, King of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, thirdly Maria Josepha (1803-1829), 4th daughter of Prince Maximilian of Saxony, fourthly, in 1829, his niece Maria Cristina, Queen Regent of Spain 1833-1840.
