Lot Essay

The present fine and detailed cast displays Eugene Lanceray's (1848-1886) mastery in representing horses. The horse is rendered with all the spirit and taughtness of musculature typical of a wild animal. It is caught in a dramatic rearing position with mane and tail swept into the air, which Lanceray has further emphasised by the contrast with the tame horse. The group is also an interesting historical document of a vanishing practice.
