Lot Essay

Alfredo Pina (1887-1966) studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, but moved to Paris before the First World War, where he was influenced by the work of Rodin and Bourdelle. The present group belongs to a series of studies of Sudanese people, probably following a visit to Africa, which includes the Banana Vendor and the Woman of the Sudan (Pawlowski op. cit.). They each reveal Pina's characteristic spontaneous and sensitive modelling, but furthermore, display an innovative interest in ethnographic types.
