Designed in the Louis XVI 'antique' manner, with doves, emblematic of Venus, attending Cupid's torch. This basic form relates to lights supplied by the bronzist Pierre-François Feuchère for Marie-Antoinette's apartments at the Château de Saint-Cloud in 1788. (See A. Sassoon and G. Wilson, Decorative Arts at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Santa Monica, 1986, fig. 137.) This pattern, which relates to a pair in the Louvre Museum, is illustrated (see H. Ottomeyer, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p. 293)
