The body of the instrument covered with a rich gold ground and scratched through to black to indicate the graining of the wood, flowering vines in takamakie over the sound-board and spilling over the side, a decorative band with mura-nashiji, the moon just above the bridge of the biwa, the neck of red/brown lacquer sprinkled with very fine kimpun and the back of the body is of roiro with mura-nashiji, silver lacquer pegs and rich nashiji interior with a kinji surround
