The majority of his themes were taken from English literature and many of the books which he chose to ilustrate are still famous today. This list of books illustrated by Wheatley includes, Clara Reeve, The Old English Baron; Sterne, A Sentimental Journey, James Fennell, Lindor and Clara, or, the British Officer; and A Lover's Anger and To a young Gentleman in Love both by Matthew Prior (1664-1721).
