1973 2.8-LITRE PORSCHE 911RSR CARRERA
Registration No. Formerly VBY 586L (UK)
Chassis No. 9113600784
Engine No. 6930117
Black with black trim
Engine: flat six cylinder, 2,808cc, 300bhp at 8,000rpm; Gearbox: five speed manual; Brakes: ventilated discs all round; Suspension: front, independent MacPherson telescopic damper struts, lower wishbones, longitudinal torsion bars; rear, independent, trailing radius arms, transverse torsion bars, telescopic dampers. Right hand drive.
The classic Carrera RS 2.7-litre formed the basis on Porsche's assault on the international 3-litre classes. The RSR racing version of this car had Nikasil cylinders so that a 92mm bore could be used to raise the capacity to 2,808cc. The standard wheel widths and arches had been arranged to use 9in wide wheels at the front and 11in wide wheels at the back. Twin circuit ventilated and perforated brake discs from the 917 racing car were used with a balance bar to adjust the front to rear braking ratio. An extra deep air dam containing a massive oil cooler and a ducktail spoiler were used on the ultra lightweight body. The suspension was also modified to cope with the demands of the wide racing tyres. The body was extensively lightened with expensive material, and the glass was replaced with perspex except for the windscreen. The RSR made its debut at Daytona in early 1973 running in Group 5 prior to homologation into Group 4 and for the next three years in both 2.8 and 3-litre form produced inummerable victories around the world.
This particular example is the ex-Ray Thackwell car which was collected new from the factory in Stuttgart and sent direct to Australia where it was converted to the very rare right hand drive specification by the official Porsche dealers Hamilton, thereby being factory approved. It was entered into a number of local races and Mr Thackwell won the 1973 championship.
Following its retirement from the track, it was stored on the premises of an automotive parts dealer (the famous Jaguar racer Bob Jane) before being purchased by a Queenslander who rebuilt it and registered it HOT 911 for road use. It was featured in the April 1990 edition of Motor Sport being put through its paces by Michael Fisher following its return to the UK. It has recently been part of a collection in Belgium.
With only 49 2.8 RSRs being built this is a rare opportunity to acquire a part of Porsche racing history. For English buyers it has the added advantage of being right hand drive. Importantly too, this example, unlike many has not been spoilt by uprating to the later 1973 specification with pronounced wheel arches and huge rear wing which is not so pleasing to the eye. With 300bhp, rocket like acceleration, characteristic rear engine handling this road/race car is not for the faint hearted!
