AN ITALIAN GLAIVE, with large cleaver-shaped blade with convex main edge, back-edged towards the point with, at the bottom, a small projection formed as the outline of a dolphins head, in the centre of the back a slender upward curving crescentic spike, the base with two side-spikes, tapering socket of flattened octagonal section with prominent cushion moulding at the top, and traces of etching throughout (rust pitted overall), two side-straps (incomplete), and later velvet- covered wooden staff partly set with nails, the heads formed as bronze masks, circa 1587, probably Brescian
