Designed in the bold 'antique' manner, promoted by George, Prince of Wales, later King George IV in the decoration of Carlton House, London, the chair's scroll back and herm-fluted and serpentined Grecian klismos legs derive from a parlour chair pattern engraved in 1802 and published as plate 5 in Thomas Sheraton's, Cabinet Dictionary, 1803. The involuted arms correspond to that of his 'Grecian squab' pattern, plate 49, while the crest-rail's cluster-stringing and bobbin-enrichments feature in his 'Bedroom chair' pattern, published as plate 28. Its ebonised enrichments was popularised by Thomas Hope's furnishings of his Duchess Street mansion/museum, that were illustrated in his, Household Furniture & Interior Decoration, 1807.
