Lot Essay

The distinctive winged feet on this table are inspired by those on a large pedestal writing desk in the Duchess Street mansion of the connoisseur Thamas Hope (d.1831). He illustrated the desk in his supremely influential book Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, pl.11, nos.1 and 2.
