Although there is an apparent stylistic contrast between the upper and lower sections of this bureau-bookcase, the mahogany top of the base has never been polished and both constructionally and in the close matching of the timbers the top and base are consistent. The most credible explanation is that this piece is of North Country origin, and this theory is supported by the unusual design of the slide and the characteristic chequered stringing to the interior drawers.
