Lot Essay

This candlestick, in the Louis XVI 'antique' manner, evolved from a tripod pattern with a sacred urn supported on caryatid nymph herms, such as the goldsmith Robert-Joseph Auguste manufactured in the late 1760s. This type with krater-vase on satyr-enriched plinths and four garlanded herm-supports, features in a late 1780s design by the architect J. D. Dugourc (d.1825).
