'Matchem' by 'Cade' was one of the three stallions foaled in the mid eighteenth century, with 'Herod' and 'Eclipse', from whom every racehorse traces its descent in the male line.
'Matchem' was owned by William Fenwick of Bywell, Northumberland and had been bred by John Holmes of Carlisle in 1748. 'Matchem' was ridden by John Singleton at his first successful meeting with 'Trajan', owned by Charles Bowles, at Newmarket in March 1755. Mr. Bowles called for a second race, recorded by the present picture, which took place at Newmarket in April 1756. The race was over four miles, at level weights and 'Matchem' won easily consolidating his position as one of the most successful horses of his day.
'Matchem' lived to the remarkable age of 33, the greatest recorded age for any important stallion and was described by a contemporary as having a 'general want of symmetrical proportion'
