Lot Essay
Sir Danvers Osborn (1715-1753) was the only surviving son of John Osborn (1683-1718) and Hon. Sarah Byng. His uncle was the ill-fated Admiral Byng. Osborn inherited the baronetcy and estates of his grandfather Sir John Osborn, 2nd Bt. in 1720 at the age of 4. He married Lady Mary Montagu, daughter of the 1st Earl of Halifax, by whom he had two sons [see lot 20 for further notes]. Osborn was M.P. for Bedfordshire in 1747-53 and Colonel of the Bedford Regiment under the Duke of Cumberland during the 1745 Rebellion. Osborn died in 1753 while Governor of New York. Danvers, Massachussets, is named after him, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, after his brother-in-law
