29½ x 47 5/8in. (74.9 x 121cm.)

Lot Essay

Several versions of this composition are known: at the National Museum of Wales, Welsh Folk Museum, St. Fagan's; with the Property Services Agency; at Carshalton House, Surrey: other versions were sold in these Rooms, 22 April 1983, lot 41 and 15 July 1988, lot 41. In all these, the fountains, the two main avenues, and the gardens on either side appear, but differ in detail. At one time the house was thought to be Trewornan House, but the composition is now considered to be a Netherlandish-style capriccio. For a discussion, see J. Harris, The Artist and the Country House, 1979, p.58, no.48
