Lot Essay

Portrait studies by the same hand are in the Institut Néerlandais, Paris and in the Metropolitan Museum, J. Byam Shaw, The Italian Drawings in the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, 1983, I, no. 293, III, pl. 342 and J. Bean and W. Griswold, 18th Century Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1990, nos. 141-3, illustrated. The attribution to Nazari was suggested by Janos Scholz who owned nine drawings by this hand which, like most drawings of this group, but not the present examples, came from an album broken up by Ferruccio Asta in the 1940s
