Lot Essay

For the tweflth netsuke: Yuranosuke is the stage name used by actors in the role of Oishi Kuranosuke, also called Oboshi, chief retainer of Asano Lord of Takumi, who with his forty-six companions avenged his Lord's death. The story is immortalised in the play Chushingura, "The Loyal League", commonly called The Forty-Seven Ronin. They commited seppuku in 1703 and were buried in a circle around their masters grave. Incense is still burnt and fresh flowers placed on their graves.
