A hitherto unrecorded version of the central part of the still-life in the Hermitage (La natura morta in Italia, ed. F. Porzio, Milan, 1989, II, p.776, fig.910), which is one of the artist's most securely attributed works, having been described as his as early as 1747 in an inventory of pictures at Houghton Hall. A version in which the composition corresponds with the present painting with only minor variations is in a Roman private collection (ibid., p.779, fig.915, as 'Copia da Michelangelo di Campidoglio (?)')
