A MUGHAL LACQUER LEATHER SHIELD (dhal) of convex circular form, the outer face fitted with four floral-pattern gold damascened bosses, the black surrounding ground painted and gently moulded in gold, brown and red with four Japanese-style arrangements of flowers, plants and grasses, the gold in relief, each arising from a gold-glitter relief ground, a similar fifth arrangement in the centre between the bosses, gold-glitter border, the underside plain black with later leather straps and red velvet arm pad, 18/19th century, (some minor wear and restoration)
