Lot Essay

The decoration on this pair of vases is after a design by Cornelis Pronk. The diaper-pattern is identical to that on the well-known 'Arbour' design by Pronk, and is also found on the 'Plume' pattern attributed to the same artist. D. Howard and J. Ayers, op.cit., vol. I, fig. 298a, illustrate a vase of this rare shape with a comparable enamelled flower.

A five-piece garniture of this design was sold Christie's New York, 30 January 1993, lot72.
