The inscription reads TO EDWARD JAMES ESQ: Q.C./FROM JAMES B. THOMSON/AS A SMALL TOKEN OF REGARD/AND ACKNOWLEDGEMNT FOR THE MASTERLY DEFENCE/IN VINDICATION OF HIS CHARACTER/IN THE CASE OF THOMSON V. INMAN/DECR. XXVI MDCCCLX. Although there is no record of the above case in the Law Reports, it seems likely to have taken place between William Inman, founder of the Inman Line of steamships, and . Edward James (1807-1867) was an emminent barrister, with a great knowledge of commercial law, especially in shipping.
