Large 2° (605 x 430mm.). 48 hand-finished chromolithographic plates (one as frontispiece), after Descourtilz by Waterlow & Sons (some marginal dampstaining, occasional spotting, plate III heavily spotted). Modern red half morocco gilt, t.e.g., original front wrappers of each of the four parts bound in at the back, by Bayntun.
FIRST EDITION of a work described by Borba de Moraes as "much searched for, and rare." The book depicts and describes 164 species of tropical birds, including fifteen new species and one new genus.
The book was issued in four parts between 1852 and 1856. Some copies bear an imprint on the verso of the title, "Londres: de l'imprimerie de Joseph Masters et Cie,...1852." The present copy has instead: "Londres: l'imprimerie de Waterlow et fils" without any date. Thomas Reeves appears on the title page and three of the four original wrappers as publisher, the wrapper of Part II names the publisher as Ed. Rensburg. In the Bradley-Martin copy the last three parts were all published by Rensburg. An English edition of the work was published by Waterlow in 1859. Nissen IVB 236; Zimmer 166; Fine Bird Books p.70
