TREW, Christoph Jacob. Hortus Nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens Floribus ... Der das ganze Jahr hindurch im schönsten Flor stehende Blumengarten. Nuremberg: vol.I: heirs of Seligmann, vol.II-III: Adam Ludwig Wirsing, 1768-1786.
3 volumes in 1, large 2° (507 x 350mm.). 154 plates on 152 sheets, all finely engraved and hand-coloured. (Volume 3 lacking all of the letterpress text and plates 155-180, very slight rust stains on plates 1 & 15, and minute tear in fold of plate 97.) 19th-century half calf (worn, covers almost detached).
ONE OF THE FINEST AND MOST SUMPTUOUS BOTANICAL WORKS OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, illustrating a wide range of the cultivated flowers of the period, including more than 20 plates of tulips. The superb watercolour and gouache painting almost entirely eclipses the engraved lines. About 40 plates are by Ehret, the greatest botanical artist of the 18th century, others by Dietzschin, Eisenberg, Baurenfeind, etc. The complete work comprises 180 plates, but the last volume was not completed until 1786, and VERY FEW SETS SURVIVE COMPLETE. EVEN IMPERFECT SETS RARELY APPEAR FOR SALE. Internally a very fine copy. Nissen 1995; Dunthorne 310 ('One of the finest records of the cultivated flowers of the period'); Great Flower Books p.78.
