(One plate torn and repaired but with loss to upper outer corner, small hole in a second, three others with tears to margins (one of these repaired), some spotting to about half of the the plates, slight and marginal in the main.) Modern half cloth, original wrappers to part I bound in, (spine detached).
FIRST EDITION. This copy is without the rare 22nd and final part published in 1817, and the even rarer title page (the upper wrapper forms a substitute title). The editors intended that the work should be considerably larger: the wrappers of part XVII included an announcement that volume I would be completed in 24 or 25 parts; the uneven spread of species confirms this intention (i.e. parts I-XXII include 58 plates of owls and birds-of-prey).
